Tracked versus cantilever
Tracked sliding gates run on a wheel and a ground track. They're cost-effective and handle heavy gates well, but the track has to stay clear — leaves, stones and storm debris in the track are a common cause of call-outs. They suit level openings.
Cantilever sliding gates hang from rollers set to one side and have no ground track at all, so there's nothing to block and nothing to trip over. They cost more and need room beside the opening for the counterweight section, but on a site prone to debris or on a rural block they're the lower-maintenance answer.

Sizing and the run-back space
The single thing people underestimate is the space a sliding gate needs to open into. A gate has to slide back its own full width plus a bit more, so a four-metre opening needs well over four metres of clear fence line beside it. If that space is taken up by a wall, a garden or a second driveway, a slider may not be viable and a swing gate or a bi-parting pair might be the answer instead. This is exactly the kind of thing that has to be checked on site.
Motors, safety and the local climate
The motor is matched to the gate's weight and to how many times a day it will cycle — a busy family driveway works the motor far harder than an occasional acreage entrance, and under-sizing the motor is a false economy that shortens its life. The motor's connection to mains power is done by a licensed electrician, and on a rural block a long way from power, a solar-powered slider is often the sensible answer.
Every automated sliding gate is set up with the safety devices it needs — force limiting and safety photocells or edges — so it can't close on a car, a pet or a child. This is a legal and safety requirement, not an optional extra. Roughly its own width again, to one side of the opening, to slide fully open — a bit more in practice. If that run-back space is blocked by a wall or garden, a slider may not suit and we'd look at a swing or bi-parting gate instead. We check this on site.
Is a track or cantilever gate better for my block?
Cantilever gates have no ground track to block with leaves, stones or debris, so they're lower-maintenance on debris-prone or rural sites, at a higher upfront cost. Tracked gates are cost-effective on clean, level openings. It comes down to your site.
Can you automate my existing sliding gate?
Often, yes, if the gate is sound, runs freely and its weight suits a motor. A retrofit adds a motor, safety sensors and control, and is usually much cheaper than a new gate. We assess the existing gate before recommending it.
How much run-back room does a sliding gate need?
