Is your gate a candidate?
Not every manual gate can be automated as it stands, and we would rather say so on the first visit than after the motor is fitted. What we check:
- Does it move freely? A gate that drags, binds or needs a lift to latch will fight the motor. Hinges, rollers and tracks often need attention first.
- Are the posts solid? Automation puts repeated load on the hinge post or the guide post. Posts that move in the ground, common on the Bellarine's sandy soils and on Geelong's clay after a wet winter, need re-setting before a motor goes on.
- Is the gate sound? A sagging timber gate or a rusted steel frame may need repair before it is worth automating.
- Is there room for the motor? Sliding gates need space beside the opening; swing gates need clearance for an arm or a spot for an underground unit.
What a retrofit involves
A typical retrofit takes a day. We fit the motor and its rack or arms, run power, install photocells across the opening, set the travel limits and force settings, and programme your remotes. If the driveway is long we add a keypad or intercom at the gate. Every retrofit finishes with a full safety test: the gate must stop and reverse on contact, and the photocells must hold it open while anything is in the opening.
Swing gates versus sliding gates
Swing gate retrofits are the most common. Above-ground arm motors fit most timber and steel pairs; underground motors suit heritage gates where visible hardware would spoil the frontage.
Sliding gate retrofits need a rack fitted along the gate and a motor beside the opening. If the gate runs on a ground track we check the track is straight and clear, because a motor will not forgive a track that a person could push through.
Farm and acreage gates
A lot of Bellarine and Surf Coast retrofits are on rural gates: long, light, and a long way from power. These often suit a solar motor, which avoids trenching a cable from the house. The gate itself usually needs a proper hinge post and a stop before it will automate cleanly, and we sort that as part of the job.
Retrofit versus replacement
There is a point where a retrofit stops making sense: if the gate needs major repairs, the posts need replacing and the opening is awkward, a new gate built for automation may end up cheaper and more reliable. We quote both where that is a genuine question so you can decide with real numbers.
